The Unit – Shawn Ryan thinks Season 4 a Go

Shawn Ryan, “The Unit”

“The Unit” executive producer Shawn Ryan has been slammed locking the final edit of “The Shield,” but took time to shot me an e-mail about “The Unit” coming back this fall.

As for “The Shield,” Shawn shares that it was “very satisfying to end it the way I wanted to, but a little sad that I’ll never be in the editing room again on ‘The Shield.’ ”

But for fans of “The Unit,” Shawn says “I’m glad that you have a number of fans clamoring for the show. Here’s the scoop: When the strike ended, we were hoping to get additional episodes for the spring, like most shows.”

Unfortunately, Shawn says, CBS didn’t need the episodes for April and May because the network had filled the schedule with new episodes of reality shows like “Big Brother” and “Survivor.” Shawn assures us that CBS loves the show and that ratings-wise it is a “solid base hit although not a home run against brutal competions in ‘House” and ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ ”

Shawn says he thinks the chances are good the “The Unit” will be picked up for the fall – but doesn’t expect CBS to give them a solid answer until closer to the May upfronts.

“We’ve always had to wait until the May upfronts to find out our fate (even after our first season when we were the top rated new show of the year!). I imagine it will be the same again this year,” Shawn says, adding that they don’t feel safe by any means.

David Mamet, Shawn and the other writers have broken out the big plot points for next season, he says, and “I think it’s pretty great and it shakes up the show in a really wonderful way. We’ll go in and pitch it to them soon. I’m very confident they’ll be excited about it creatively. Maybe they’ll be inspired and give us an early pickup after hearing it. More likely, we’ll be waiting until May to learn our fate.”

And that’s the scoop, straight from Shawn. He’s also one of the nicest guys around, and deserves to be treated better by CBS. But, what are you gonna do?

For Gods sake…PLEASE DON’T CANCEL “THE UNIT”. That is a hot show and my boyfriend and I are looking forward to more episodes.

I haven’t heard anything about the show since the writers strike and like many fans, I hope CBS is not thinking about canceling this cool military show.

    I LOVE “THE UNIT”!!!

This is one of the most original, well written and well acted shows on right now. Please don’t replace it with another annoying, inane “reality” show!

    I LOVE “THE UNIT”, TOO!

I am so glad to hear they will be bring The Unit back. I can’t believe they thought a mind numbing hour like big brother could replace it. CBS keeps shooting them selves in the foot by putting on good shows and then replacing them with mind numbing so called reality. I don’t care who can live on bugs, run around the world, or live with a bunch of strangers. All this with a camera in their face, and they call it reality . Give me a break I live reality. I want entertainment like THE UNIT.

I can’t believe they are waiting so long to put The Unit back on. What are they thinking who cares who can dance, sing and be in a house with others. Put the Unit back on for normal people to watch. We have enough reality drama in our own lives we don’t need to watch others on TV…

Bring THE UNIT back. It baffles me that there is enough to fans to keep stupid reality shows like big brother and dancing with the stars on tv. And aggrevates me it can take over fanatastic shoes like the unit. It showed it can hold its own, it awesome and hence it coming back well for the third season that everyone was excited for!

What a great interview! It’s great to hear from Shawn Ryan!

TV Guide reported that CBS is planning to air repeats of The Unit. In light of this news, it is critically important for fans in non Nielson households to email or call CBS Executive Services and let them know you watched, after each episode. This includes the people who record and watch it later.

This is the only way CBS will get an accurate number of households who watched. Otherwise, they just look at the Nielson ratings, which is an INACCURATE mehtod of rating the show.

Below is the contact info. Fans can also call and email now and ask CBS to return the show to their schedule. This fan campaign has been ongoing for several months.

Been wondering lately what happened to my favorite shows, 24 and The Unit. Found out tonight while surfing around that 24 is starting season 7 back up again in January, 2009. The unit however, has a more undetermined fate.
It seems CBS likes the show, …

I can’t wait for the unit to start. The Unit is by far one of the most riveting talked about show I’ve ever seen. I have a group of friends that all the watch is the Unit. So many show out there is just meaningless dribble. The Unit just makes you appreciate good writing, good production, and the possible thought. Hmmm this could be happening. BRING THE UNIT BACK!!!

The networks are losing credibility with their lame reality shows…enough already. Bring back The Unit so there will be a reason to turn on the tv. If not, then my tv is just a decoration.

    Dear CBS.

Canceling this show would mean eliminating the last realistic, no-BS drama on TV that doesn’t involve a hospital. The continuity of THE UNIT doesn’t interfere with the casual viewer’s comprehension of each individual plot, the action is intense and believable, and so is the home-life drama… despite how I think it drags a little on the action, my GF wouldn’t watch it otherwise.

But what I like best is the total lack of political preaching and realistic approach to the problems in the world. Never “over the top”, none of the ticking-time-bomb torture garbage you see on 24, no “War is good” BS… just a crew of honest, patriotic true-believers from broken homes, doing what they think is right, attitudes tempered by a healthy cynicism towards politics while recognizing their role in the machine. I mean, you can’t get that anywhere else except on shows like THE SHIELD (!) and THE WIRE.

Please bring back The Unit! It is my “can’t miss” show…and I have missed it terribly since the strike. Well-written and well-acted. And I think it is the first show my entire family agrees on. We know not to call each other on Tuesday night during the show. It is time for great shows to take their rightful place in TV lineups again…and for the “reality” nonsense to go away.

I missed The Unit immensely when it did not return in the spring of this year (08)
and was very happy when it returned this fall. This is about the only TV show that I plan my schedule around. I am a 65 year old woman, and like this show at least as much as my husband and our young adult sons do. It is intense, intelligent drama–a good mix of action, politics, and relationships. Please, please keep it coming.
