Gibson named new ABC anchor

Charles Gibsonwill take over the reins at ABC’s World News Tonight”beginning Monday, May 29.

The nightly news has had a bad run lately. First, anchor Peter Jennings left the desk after discovering he had lung cancer in April 2005. He died last August.

Bob Woodruff and Elizabeth Vargasofficially took over the anchor duties in January. Later that month, while covering the war in Iraq, Woodruff was seriously injured in an attack. He’s recovering, but won’t be returning to work in the near future. Then Vargas announced she was going to have another baby and would be out on maternity leave.

When Vargas returns, she won’t be going back to the anchor desk. Instead, she will limit herself to the “20/20” anchor desk and doing specials.

My doctors have asked that I cut back on my schedule considerably. What works best for me and my family is to return in the fall to ’20/20′ as I raise my new baby and young son,” Vargas says. “The broadcast needs someone who can give 150 percent day in and day out. I am not in a position to give that right now and it wouldn’t be fair to do any less.”

Gibson will continue as a co-anchor of “Good Morning America” until June 30.

NBC announces new season

Before we even begin with the announcements, how sad are we that “Scrubs” isn’t on the fall schedule?

Even telling us that it will return as a midseason replacement series doesn’t give me a happy face.

So what will we be seeing this fall on NBC?

NBC is loading its new 2006-07 primetime schedule with six new dramas and four new comedies. Sunday’s filled with football for those who care. Which isn’t me.

The new dramas are:
“Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” ( 9 p.m.Thursdays), Emmy
Award winner Aaron Sorkin’s (“The West Wing”) insider’s take on the backstage drama of a late-night comedy sketch show, with Matthew Perry, Amanda Peet and Bradley Whitford (“The West Wing”).

“Kidnapped” (9 p.m. Tuesdays), a serialized thriller about a teenaged boy’s kidnapping starring Jeremy Sisto (“Six Feet Under”) and Delroy Lindo (“The Core”).

“Friday Night Lights” (8 p.m. Tuesdays) inspired by the hit feature film that conveys the passion and sky-high expectations of a small Texas town for its top-ranked football team. Stars Kyle Chandler (“King Kong”).

“Heroes” (9 p.m. Mondays) centers on the radically changed lives of several ordinary people who find they possess extraordinary powers.

The two new comedies are:

“20 Good Years” (9 p.m.Wednesdays) starring John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor as two buddies facing a late-life crisis.

“30 Rock” stars Tina Fey (“Saturday Night Live”) as the head writer of a frenetic late-night television variety show (Fey is also the writer and an executive producer with Lorne Michaels). Alec Baldwin (“The Aviator”) and Tracy Morgan (“Saturday Night Live”) co-star.

Midseason shows include the drama “TheBlack Donnellys” from “Crash” Oscar winners Paul Haggis and Bobby
Moresco.
The series is a gritty saga about four working-class
Irish brothers’ exploits in organized crime. It will debut at 10 p.m. Thursdays
and continue with consecutive original episodes. As a result, “ER” will premiere in its 13th season this fall at 10 p.m. Thursdays and will run with virtually continuous original episodes until its
cliffhanger in December. The Emmy-winning series will resume after “The
Black Donnellys” completes its first season.

After the NFL season concludes in January 2007, the new Sunday lineup will feature “America’s Got Talent” with host Regis Philbinpresiding over a wide-open national talent contest produced by Simon Cowell and a new cycle of “The Apprentice.”

We’re so over Trump’s folly, but maybe that’s just us.

After Trump will be the new drama “Raines,” starring Jeff Goldblum (“The Lost World: Jurassic Park”) as an eccentric police detective.

Also for mid-season are new comedies “The Singles Table,” depicting a group of witty and single strangers who meet, console
and befriend each other at a wedding, and “Andy Barker, P.I.,” starring Andy Richter. as an earnest CPA who embraces the unlikely chance to become a private detective.

Fan favorites “Crossing Jordan” and “Scrubs” will return to the NBC schedule at some point later in the season.

Idol chatter

Is there life after Chris Daughtry?

It was shocking to see the frontrunner get the boot last week, but it would seem America has spoken _ and the name isn’t Daughtry.

Daughtry got a job offer from Feul, but no word on whether he’ll take the offer. In the meantime, let’s talk about the finalists. My next-favorite would be Taylor, followed closely by Elliott and Katharine a far third.

Why?

Because Katherine has no soul. She’s beautiful, she can certainly carry a tune, seems like a good person, but she has all the passion of a shiny rock.

Thoughts?

“House” a quack?

Could it be that my beloved “House” isn’t quite on the cutting edge of medicine?

My pal Elizabeth Jardina sent me this link, which she claims is the best thing to happen on the Internet since cuteoverload.com. And I’ve got to agree.

At http://politedissent.com/archives/1184, a doctor watches “House” and analyzes what’s realistic and what’s not.

I could read these things all day, which is probably why the blog hasn’t been updated as often as it should be..

Fox Late Night

For those you don’t remember Chevy Chase and his late-night Fox talk show, say a little prayer for dodging that bullet.

Chase did a legendary crash-and-burn.

But Fox is ready to test the waters again with “Talk Show with Spike Feresten” beginning Sept. 16, following “MADtv.”

This one actually looks promising: a combination of talk and comedy sketches

Real live “Simpsons”

Just when you think “The Simpsons” might be running out of ideas for their opening, along comes a first: Real, live Simpsons.

For the first time ever, the opening sequence of “The Simpsons” at 8 p.m. Sunday on Fox-Channel 2 will have real people playing the animated characters.

From the Simpsons parting through the clouds to the infamous Bart writing on the chalkboard, Homer pulling the nuclear rod out of his shirt, Maggie scanned at the supermarket and the always-anticipated “couch gag” conclusion, the live-action opening mirrors each element of the animated sequence.

Said “The Simpsons” executive producer Al Jean, “I’m just amazed there are people who want to be known for looking like the Simpsons.”

WB’s censor end-run

Bowing to pressure from recent Federal Communication Commission fines for indecency, the WB has chosen to delete some scenes from the new series “Bedford Diaries,” about randy college students taking a class in sexuality.
But in a truly subversive move, the network will show the uncensored version where the FCC has yet to tread: on the Internet. The WB issued a statement on Thursday:

“The WB takes its responsibility as a broadcast network very seriously and we have always been mindful of the FCC’s indecency rules. While we believe that the previous uncut version of “The Bedford Diaries” is in keeping with those rules, out of an abundance of caution, we decided to make some additional minor changes to the premiere episode of the series which is set to debut next Wednesday, March 28th.
“We also decided to make the original version available on the Internet at TheWB.com which allows those interested in seeing the producer’s creative vision to do so while at the same time recognizing the special rules that apply to the broadcast medium.”

Let the streaming steamy video begin.
