More Comments on KTVU-Channel 2’s Mark Curtis
From Alice Becerra:
I too am very disappointed that Mark Curtis is gone. I missed him and was wondering what was up – first thought he was ill. I watched KTVU faithfully every morning at 5:30 and enjoyed Mark and Pam but not now. The new gentleman is just well how should I put it “blaugh” I don’t like his voice, just doesn’t fit with Pam – oh well so much for my opinion. Thank you for the update on Mark Curtis he will be really missed – best wishes to him and his family.
From John Fitzgerald of Santa Rosa:
Was sorry to learn Mark would not be on channel 2 any longer. I have watched the morning news every day (today is Dec. 14) with Dave Clark and it is just not the same. It is about 8:30 am and in my home office and have changed over to KRON 4 my new channel of choice. Best of luck to Mark and his family.

GREAT! I was so enjoying a FEMALE tv reviewer (even though I think your attachment to Survivor is just plain silly) and now your gone. A newspaper that lays folks off at Christmas is sure to encourage me to subscribe. Good luck in the future!

Dave Clark makes KTVU’s 5am morning news program thoroughly unwatchable!!!!!!! I can’t stand the artifice of his ridiculous OVER-EMOTING about everything. He’s like a parody of self-conscious pontification and grandiose enunciation. Is that what they teach nowadays in TV School? Why the hell can’t he just talk normal? I’ll start watching again when they finally get someone in that time slot who can talk normal.

I should have responded sooner to the replacement of Mark Curtis and am compelled to
do so now. I thoroughly agree with the other comments about Dave Clark. I understand
he is from the L.A. area. Why the need to replace Mark Curtis with him? I didn’t see any
problem with Mark Curtis. I have watched Mornings on Two for as long as I can remember.
I never watch any other network. I don’t watch the news at 5:30, but have seen Dave
Clark filling in for Frank Summerville from 7:00 to 9:00. I’m not enjoying him at all!
Why didn’t they fill the position with Craig Debero if a change was necessary? There is
much to be said about familiarity on a morning news show and Dave Clark has sure
spoiled my mornings! Bring back Mark Curtis.

I must have been out of town when Mark left. I thought he was on vacation, and then I realized he was not coming back.
If anyone is familiar with Oakland, diversity is shoved down your throat. KTVU probably has been threatened by some group, so to avoid litigation; one gets punished just for being white. I see this all to often.
In the courts whites are even handed stiffer sentences, so the judge does not get accused of favoritism.
I will miss Mark and I hope they will bring him back in the morning. It was so pleasant to hear him in morning.
I loved to hear about the different charities he helped out on, either over the weekend or after work hours. He is a true to his community and sacrificed time with his family to help others.
It is almost like nice guys finish last and the one who makes the most trouble gets ahead. There is something wrong with the Bay Area.
Good Luck to you Mark we will miss you.

I think you’re a little off here Rodriguez. PERHAPS we assume Richmond stated that he wishes a black guy replaces him. But then why Clark ? Clark sucks. Also Sommerville has been expected for at least the last few years to be Richmond’s understudy- Hence the 6’o’clock newscast and Sommersville having to disrupt (bigtime) his routine to substitute for Richmond. If it were a race thing… Jesse Gary or some other local black guy (not Debro …good reporter- not a good anchor) would have been a better choice. I fully expected to see Sommersville and Sidner at 10 o’clock in a few years. So much for that. Also… blacks often suffer harsher sentencing for same/similiar crimes if whites…

Would this shuffling have anything to do with KTVU about to lose it’s FOX affiliation and with Fox wooing KRON… can we get a scoop Susan ?

Alright people, please calm down. I am African American and, obviously all for diversity, HOWEVER, fare is fare…..Mark is a better fit for a station that covers a Bay Area demographic and I am surprised that the news station did not realize this. Don’t get me wrong Dave, your on air voice is very distinguished, however, it sounds like it belongs on something that covers a larger region…not news broadcasting for Channel 2, which is known for being a Bay Area station, therefore people tune in to get a comfortable Bay area look and feel. The people that tune into a Bay Area news station are wanting meat and potatoes, not caviar and, it really has nothing to do with race. I have watched mornings on 2 for years and I tune into Mornings on 2, expecting AND wanting meat and potatoes. Mark, AND, Dennis, both, happen, to appeal to a more meat and potatoes type of audience. However, let me be PERFECTLY clear here, a meat and potatoes feel is not better or worse that caviar, but just different in feel. Bottom line, there is nothing wrong with your sound Dave, it is just not a right fit for a Bay Area news station. Your sound would be a better fit for, and perhaps more well received by viewers of a station or, even program that covers a larger region. I think your voice and presence would work well on something like Nightline. Good luck to, BOTH, Mark and Dave as, it sounds like both of these guys will actually need it.

Just like one of your other responders, I was unaware of the replacement of Mark Curtis. I made an assumption that he was either on vacation or dealing with a health issue. Channel 2 has been my only news station in the am/pm, for so long I can’t even guess. I’ve watched Dennis Richmond from his early days, and have admired all the individuals that you’ve hired, as they have served our communities with great respect and informative news. Mark Curtis has a great on screen personality, demonstrates warmth and sincere compassion.I certainly hope there will be a reconsideration of his employment; he has that (it) factor thats hard to find. Best wishes Mark, hope the higher ups appreciate how people feel about you!

“Meat and potatoes”??? What baloney!!! Of all KTVU’s reporters and anchors, tenured or new, again, IMHO, Dave Clark’s delivery holds unique distinction of projecting pompous artifice and self-conscious unease. It’s long past the time he ought quit his annoying habits of distracting finger tapping and lower-lip biting when the other anchor speaks. And IMHO he has no detectible chemistry with ANY of KTVU’s other anchors – although I quietly commend them all for feigning commeraderie with him. If Mark Curtis was punted with explicit goal to have a new black male increase morning diversity, I’m at a loss to fathom why KTVU passed over well-tenured Kraig Debro or under-utilized David Stevenson, who (IMHO) are both TONS more watchable, likeable, and professional than Dave Clark is. I agree that he’s more suited to very late night news scheduling — only so he’ll be out of any time slot that I loyally tune in TV to get news.

Also, I believe Jesse Gary is another likeable KTVU presence highly deserving to replace the constantly annoying Dave Clark.
